C'est une MAISON DE CAMPAGNE... à la ville, bien que « ville » soit une dénomination excessive pour ce gros bourg blotti autour de son clocher, mais à seulement quelques encablures des RER et de l'agitation de PARIS-LA DEFENSE. Cette maison est donc un compromis parfait pour « le rat des champs » et « le rat des villes ».

Est-ce à cela qu'a pensé un célèbre philologue français en faisant l'acquisition de ce « clos » en 1848 ? certainement, car il voulait le calme de la concentration proche des obligations parisiennes... et il s'est tellement plu dans ce lieu qu'il y resta 30 ans. En effet, l'illustre savant Emile LITTRE, curieux de tout et « Homme du siècle » pour Zola ou encore « l'une des consciences les plus complètes de l'univers » pour Renan, poursuivit et acheva dans ce lieu privilégié l'œuvre de sa vie « un dictionnaire monumental de la langue française » ; pressé par Louis Hachette de terminer ce qu'il avait débuté en 1841, il décide de s'isoler à la campagne et acquiert, à crédit, au MESNIL une petite maison où il pourrait « disposer des heures ».

Bien sûr, la maison d'époque où il vécut n'est plus : on la détruisit en 1932 pour créer l'entrée de ce « Clos Littré » où fut bâtie cette résidence campagnarde ; mais on peut toujours, ô combien, y « disposer des heures » dans la quiétude, face à un sublime jardin de 2.500 m2 « clos » de hauts murs de pierre, délimité par une majestueuse « allée de tilleuls » intouchable puisqu'inscrite.

This is a COUNTRY RESIDENCE... in town, although « town » is a rather excessive term to describe this sizeable community clustered around its church bell-tower, while only a short drive away from the RER and the hustle of PARIS-LA DEFENSE. This property is therefore a perfect compromise, suiting both « country mouse » and « town mouse ».

Is that what a renowned French philologist had in mind when he acquired this « plot of land » in 1848? Without a doubt, for he was seeking a tranquil harbour in which to concentrate, within reach of Paris and his obligations there... he was so content living here that he stayed for 30 years. Indeed, the illustrious scholar Emile LITTRE, interested in everything and noted as « man of the century » by Zola and as « one of the most comprehensive minds in the universe » by Renan, pursued and completed his life's work in this privileged location: his « monumental dictionary of the French language » . Encouraged by Louis Hachette to finish this work, first begun in 1841, he decided to isolate himself in the countryside and bought a small house on credit in MESNIL where he could « have time to himself ».

Naturally the original house where he lived no longer exists: it was destroyed in 1932 to make way for the entrance to the « Littré Residence » where this country home was built; but one can still « have time to oneself » in complete tranquility, cocooned in the heavenly 2,500m2 gardens, enclosed by high stone walls and accessed along a majestic linden avenue which is listed and can therefore not be disturbed.
